For those folks wondering when all those cable channels will start broadcasting in High Def, it looks like the answer is Real Soon Now.
DirecTV 10 blasted off from Baikonur this evening on top of a Russian Proton rocket. Assuming that it manages its mid-course maneuvering and gets to geosynchronous orbit tomorrow morning, it will be able to broadcast over a hundred national HD channels to DirecTV subscribers. Among those announced are HD feeds of CNN, SciFi, FX, USA, A&E, History, MTV and about a dozen HBO channels, not to mention a number of national and regional sports feeds, such as the NFL and Big Ten. Many are expected to start transmission when the satellite enters service in September. No doubt local cable will follow along as quickly as they can.
And I'll finally be able to watch Battlestar Galactica in HD.
UPDATE: The spacecraft is in its geosynch transfer orbit, everything nominal, with the fifth and final transfer engine burn remaining at 3AM PDT. See the mission blog or the mission profile PDF for more.
