The Hissy Fit

It's about Florida. Still. Nearly seven years after the biggest meltdown in American politics, Gore's partisans haven't let up. Sure, President Bush has contributed, big-time, to his own problems, but there is a very vocal 10-20% of the population that has never given him a chance. They wuz robbed, and nothing whatsoever (e.g. logic, reason, country) will turn their minds.

They hate Bush. Blind, cold, black hate. The kind that saner people reserve for Pol Pot or Robert Mugabe. But the Bush-haters would rather the sun went nova, if they could only blame it on Bush.

Now, when Bill Clinton was president there were those that hated him, too. They blamed Clinton from everything from cocaine deals to murder to rape. But it was a small loony faction, constituting a fringe even on Free Republic, not the base of a major political party.

So, we have people who feel that losing a war is a victory if it hurts Bush. A major city gets wiped out in a hurricane? SCORE! Bad for Bush. I've even heard someone enter a discussion on al Qaeda nuking New York with "maybe that would get people to impeach Bush."

Saw a parade today in Santa Monica. Fourth of July. Were there any Iraqi veterans? Well, sort of, if you count "Iraqi Veterans Against the War." Veterans marching elsewhere would probably have been booed. That's how far we've come. Not sure how we get past it. Giving these folks the keys doesn't seem like the answer.
