Eco-Privilege

Did you know that those HOV stickers do more than let you clog up the carpool lanes and get state and federal tax breaks? Some you might not know about:

Hybrids don't need smog checks -- even though near-zero smog performance is required to get one of those decals, it is not apparently necessary to keep one. I guess a Honda Insight will run perfectly forever, unlike, say, a Corolla.

In Los Angeles city and most of Los Angeles County a Prius can park for free. The rest of us have to feed the meters, but a car with HOV decals doesn't have to. Other cities may follow suit.

Now, I'm all for hybrids. My next car will be a hybrid -- I'm an ideal hybrid candidate (20 miles a day through stop-and-go city traffic; never above 45mph). But all this line-cutting and other special breaks makes one wonder how far you can take "encouragement" before it gets to privilege.
