With all today's panic over the uncorrected graphic-content virus (WMF), it should be noted that AMD64 machines contain something called "Deta Execution Protection" in hardware. DEP apparently prevents the exploit in the new virus from working. Intel's processors do not yet have this feature. So, if you have ANY AMD 64-bit processor (Athlon64, Opteron), relax. You're immmune if you are running XP SP2, which supports hardware DEP. From SANS, who published the unofficial patch:
With Windows XP SP2, Microsoft introduced DEP. It protects against a wide range of exploits, by preventing the execution of 'data segements'. However, to work well, it requires hardware support. Some CPUs, like AMD's 64 Bit CPUs, will provide full DEP protection and will prevent the exploit.See the SANS FAQ for details, or if you have an Intel machine, go there for the patch.
Update: Note also that there will never be a patch for Win98 or WinMe, yet they are vulnerable. Probably should upgrade. This is a mistake on Microsoft's part, as these machines now become completely untrustable on any network.
