According to the NYT, Mayor Villaraigosa's inaugural address ... promised to to make smog-choked Los Angeles "the greenest big city in America."
This I gotta see.
UPDATE: As Frank Martin noted in the comments, he probably means Green, not "green." As in we sort our garbage 107 ways and cars are banned.
hmmm. Possible deeper meanings"
1) "green" with envy. nah, too easy.
2) "Green" as in moolah, cash, dough, bucks, coin. As in "were going to tax you into oblivion". more likely, but a stretch.
3) "Green" as in "im sucking up to the Irish vote. Whoops wrong city. The only irish in LA are relatives and offspring of Peter OToole. Nah.
4) He gave himself an out, he said Greenest BIG city. that way if he doesnt make it, he can always argue that the other contestants are really all that big after all. Actually I wonder how LA City proper compares by size to cities like Chicago or New York or even Seattle. Most likely.
When politicians talk about the environment its because they have no ideas what to do for anything else. Its like talking about "doing something about the weather". But no matter how much you flap your arms and dance around a drum, its just not your doing when it actually rains (or if it stops), but only a politician will try to take credit for it.
