What could be worse than the FEC?

Why, the city/county of San Francisco, which is considering a law to require local bloggers to register with the city's ethics commission and report all expeditures over $1000. Further:

Blogs that mention candidates for local office that receive more than 500 hits will be forced to pay a registration fee and will be subject to website traffic audits, according to Chad Jacobs, a San Francisco City Attorney.
The SF Board of Supervisors is set to vote on the measure on April 5th, 2005.

UPDATE: Reading the proposed law's text one notes that it does not specifically include bloggers, but it does include electioneering communications over the Internet. I'll leave it to the lawyers to decide if the original report is overwrought.

Where in the world have our personal freedoms and rights gone to? Considering the Dems call themselves the party protecting First Amendment Rights, Civil Rights, etc., etc., the Lefties in SF certainly don't seem to mind deviating from their party platform if they can find a way to weasel themselves into the personal lives of their citizenry.

I'd love to be able to catch Democrats trying to crush free speech rights, but a reading of the actual text of the proposed ordinance suggests that fears about San Francisco's proposed ordinance are overblown.

I have an analysis here.

In particular, Chad Jacobs and Michael Bassik appear to have misinterpreted several key provisions of the ordinance and made up others that are not part of it at all.
